Katimavik mourns the passing of Shirley Case
News The entire Katimavik community was shocked and saddened to hear the news of the sudden passing of Shirley Case, a former Katimavik Project Leader. Ms. Case was killed during an armed ambush on August 13, 2008 while working as an aid worker in a village near Kabul, Afghanistan.

Shirley will be fondly remembered by Katimaivik staff and her numerous participants in the B.C. and Prairies regions where she worked as a Project Leader in the early 2000s. “Shirley was a very good Project Leader and a very likeable and enthusiastic person,” said Pamela Lang, Director for the British Columbian/Yukon region. “It was clear that she had a great rapport with her group of participants and that she genuinely cared about each of them.”

Ms. Case was also involved in bringing Katimavik to her home community of 100 Mile House, located in central B.C. Shirley’s parents have also been a great resource for the program since Katimavik has been running a project in that community.

After working for Katimavik, Shirley took part in development programs on an international level. Shirley worked in Africa for CARE Canada before going to Afghanistan as part of International Rescue Committee earlier this year.

“The work that Shirley did on the community level in both Canada and abroad and her dedication to improving the lives of the poor and the vulnerable embody the core values of our organization,” stated Jean-Guy Bigeau, Katimavik’s Executive Director. “On behalf of all of our participants and staff, I would like to send our deepest condolences to the friends and family of Shirley Case.”
